First Church of Seventh-day Adventists of Washington, DC

Circle of Sisterhood

History:

In November 2002, the Lord placed an idea and desire on a few young, availed hearts. As time progressed, the idea became a vision and a dream shared by many.

Circle of Sisterhood (C.O.S.) was founded in the fall of 2002 at the First Church of Seventh-day Adventists in the Petworth Community (Ward 4) of Washington D.C. byCircle of Sisterhood photo Dianna McFarlane, a youth advocate. McFarlane had a desire to develop a program that would assist young Christian women to learn how to build relationships with each other, and above all with Christ.

The current C.O.S. staff consists of dedicated women from various backgrounds who all share the same purpose—serving by training young ladies and equipping them with the tools to grow spiritually, emotionally, and socially in a loving, non-judgmental, nurturing environment.

C.O.S. has developed a host of mentoring and outreach based elements that are ledCircle of Sisterhood photo by the dedicated mentors, who are referred to as Big Sisters. Each activity and component is geared toward enriching the lives of each young lady (Little Sister). Key components include spiritual development, a Rites of Passage Program, tutorials sessions (Math and English), college prep planning, seminars on self-worth, goal setting, and relationship building – just to name a few. Since its inception, C.O.S. has served young ladies ranging from the age of ten to eighteen (fifth through twelfth grades).
